Can A New Bespoke Wardrobe Help You Become Tidier?

Designing your own bespoke wardrobe is not just an exercise in style or aesthetics. It can also be a practical way to keep your bedroom organised and make your home tidier.

It’s common to visit a friend’s house and marvel at how tidy it is, especially when your own home looks like a bomb site by comparison.

Of course, it is frequently the case that they will have been hard at work tidying up before your arrival, but often, the reality is they are very organised and able to keep things neat and tidy in a way others are not.

However, even the most house-proud will not have managed to keep their homes immaculate through hard work alone. Having interior furniture, especially the storage areas like wardrobes, set up in the right way makes the task much easier.

What Impact Does An Untidy House Have On People?

This matters more than many will admit. Some might say they are just habitually untidy, but the Furl 2026 Britain’s Clutter Report paints a very different picture:

  • 43 per cent of those polled said clutter causes arguments at home
  • 36 per cent said such rows happened every month
  • 51 per cent admitted to feeling stressed about clutter
  • 41 per cent feel embarrassed
  • 30 per cent confessed that they judge friends or family negatively when they visit and find a messy home
  • 37 per cent avoided having guests around because of the state of their homes
  • 52 per cent hide clutter before guests arrive to make the home look tidy

These findings show that if you have an untidy, cluttered home and feel unhappy about it, you are far from being alone. But you will ask, what can you do about it?

Why Is A Bespoke Wardrobe Better For Organising Your Clothes?

Using a DIY wardrobe planner to design a new bespoke wardrobe with lots of space and organised compartments can play a significant role in fixing the issue.

The alternative to a bespoke wardrobe is to have free-standing wardrobes, but these are not very useful for keeping everything organised.

There are obvious reasons for this. Firstly, there is the simple fact of design. Most of them are simple rectangles with a rail to hang items on and perhaps a compartment at the top to place smaller objects, but that is all.

A bespoke wardrobe, by contrast, can have lots of drawers, compartments, side spaces and more to help you to organise everything more systematically.

The lack of tailored storage space in a freestanding wardrobe is exacerbated by the fact that you may need more than one, whereas a bespoke fitted wardrobe can take up the full side of the room.

Consequently, you can easily end up with items hung in the wrong place, or one wardrobe being overloaded while the other has hardly anything in it.

It is when storage becomes chaotic like this that it can be very easy to lose faith in your clothes storage system and leave things hanging around on the end of a bed, over a chair, or even on the floor.

A further element is space. Firstly, a bespoke floor-to-ceiling wardrobe offers as much room as several freestanding wardrobes, so you may find you have a lot more space to play with and therefore more opportunity to get everything well organised.

Furthermore, if your room has some unusual angles, freestanding wardrobes may not fit well in the corners, so you have less space available to put them in.

On the other hand, a wardrobe designer tool means you can precisely calibrate your bespoke wardrobe’s dimensions. Consequently, you will then be able to make the most of every single scrap of space.

How Can A DIY Wardrobe Help You Make The Most Of Your Space?

The Britain’s Clutter report highlights the fact that a lack of space is often a major part of the problem, with 31 per cent of UK adults saying they do not have enough storage space.

Significantly, this is a bigger problem for younger people, rising to 42 per cent for those aged 25-34. That may be because younger people are lower down the housing ladder with smaller homes. Whether or not this is so, solutions that maximise space are invaluable.

Turning to the design itself, the tool we provide gives you every opportunity to design the wardrobe in exactly the way you need.

For example, a major problem that arises from untidiness, the very sort that can spark some of those arguments mentioned above, is difficulty in finding small items.

This is what happens when they haven’t been put in small drawers or compartments because these don’t exist, then compounded by other things being left lying around that can cover them.

When this applies to small items of clothing, jewellery or other accessories, this can be a major problem, especially when you are scrambling to find them before a night out. Having features like small drawers to keep them in can save the day (or evening).

Other folk may not have so many small items and in those cases, the need will be to have as much hanging space as possible for a huge number of dresses, trousers or shirts.

Some might argue that if you do have a lot of clothing, it is a good idea to de-clutter. But this is not mandatory. Nobody can tell you not to have more than a certain number of garments.

However, if you do want to declutter, it may actually help to have a large space that you can store things in neatly, so that you can carefully, methodically sift through them to decide what to keep and what to dispose of. That can make the decision-making a lot easier.

How Happy Will A Less Cluttered Home Make You?

None of this will solve the clutter issue completely, of course. A bigger wardrobe won’t help with having too much crockery, a pile of back copies of an old magazine that you should have thrown out years ago, or various bits of junk clogging up the shed. But it helps.

Another survey on tidiness, by Epson in 2024, found that people who lived in well-organised homes were generally happier than those who did not. While 55 per cent of those in a tidy home were “mostly happy”, only 33 per cent of messy home residents were.

Could a custom-designed wardrobe help you to become part of that happy 55 per cent?
