Many people think they can only get a built-in wardrobe if it is already in the home when they move in, or a specialist designs it for them. However, you don’t need to be an expert designer to use our tool to devise the ideal wardrobe for your room.

Whether you are moving home or want to redecorate the property you live in now, you may have given a lot of thought to the issue of where everything is stored.

Many things can be safely stowed away in cupboards, the cellar or the loft, not to be seen for months. Other items, however, will be used rather more frequently, especially your clothes.

It might be that you would like to have something different, more spacious and more user-friendly than a basic free-standing wardrobe, or you might have had one in your existing home when you moved in, but find it is absent from the home you are about to move to.

How Much Space Should You Have In Your Bedroom?

Another good reason might be because you have quite a lot of space to play with in a new home, especially if the bedroom is larger than the space you had before.

If you don’t have a built-in wardrobe in your home or the new property you are about to move to, you might be fascinated by the idea that you could create your own wardrobe. But how much space do you need? And how can you go about it if you lack design expertise.

Under the National Space Standard guidelines, introduced in 2015, the sizes of bedrooms should be as follows:

• A single room should have a minimum of 7.5 Sq m of floor space and be 2.15 m wide
• A double room (master bedroom) should have a floorspace of at least 11.5 sq m and the room should be at least 2.55 M wide
• Although these are recommendations and not legally enforced, since 2021 any new homes built under permitted development rooms are required to have at least this amount of space.

What that means is that new build homes should be of a certain size that enables you to have some options when considering wardrobes. However, even with a new build the bedroom sizes can vary, as they would in older properties.

However, the lack of a standard size, or a standard shape for that matter, should not be any barrier to having a fitted wardrobe if that is what you want.

How Can You Match A Wardrobe With The Size Of The Room?

The reason for this is that our design tool is geared up to be very flexible in enabling you to create the shape you want, which will help you match it up with the width, length and even height of a room, as well as taking into account a few quirks such as unusual corner shapes.

What you will need before you start is a long tape measure, so that you can measure out these spaces, so you know what the dimensions of the bedroom are. Then, you can get to work on entering the details into the design tool.

This will include:

• The room width
• The room length
• The ceiling height

You can also design it in 3D, so, for example, the left wall and right wall can be of different widths. The ‘orbit’ feature allows you to view this from a virtual reality elevated position.

To ensure you get it right, the system will check before you move to the next stage that you have the right measurements. If you are happy, you can move to the next stage. If not, you can go back and alter them.

How Do You Get To Choose Details Like Cabinets And Colours?

The next stage contains a function where you can click on different spaces to select various configurations for different elements of the wardrobe. These include:

• The cabinet type
• The door style options
• Door colour options

After this, you can review your order before proceeding to your purchase.

Handily, the cost will be totted up as you go along, so you can make adjustments along the way if that fits your budget better. This also provides transparency about the price as you proceed.

The process is not linear, of course. You could even rip it all up and start again if you want. However, an easier way to make adjustments would be to use other facilities we offer to get help.

These include the opportunity to speak to a designer to ask questions and clarify anything you are unsure about, or to order colour samples to help you make a decision which one to go for.

Getting colour samples to study can also help you to match up colours with those may use elsewhere, such as the paint you choose for the walls.

Once you are happy with the design, that is when you send it to us, we manufacture it, then send it to you with all the assembly instructions. It really is that simple.

This point may be reassuring to some who are wary of using technology, although those who like using tech should find no difficulty in using it and may greatly enjoy being able to play around with different possibilities before settling on a final design.

It is worth remembering that we live in an ever more technological world, in which appliances and areas of the home that we never used to think of as high-tech are increasingly that.

Moreover, for all the scare stories about AI re-enacting the Terminator storyline, the reality is that these devices are there to make life easier and more convenient.

Last year, for instance, a YouGov poll found that the tech that Britons were most excited about included many enhancements to common household appliances. Among them were:
